History of Quran-e-Pak Translation in English

The holy book “Quran-e-Pak” has been revealed on the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) who is the last Prophet of Allah Almighty. There are four holy books (Torah, Zabur, Injil and Quran Majeed) and Quran-e-Pak is the last book among them. Its basic language is Arabic but it is translated in various languages to facilitate all countries’ people in order to learn Quran-e-Pak.

This holy book has been translated in English or other languages in 17th, 18th, 19th and majority in 20th century. Here information about the Quran translation into English till 20th century is given below:
17th century:

  • Alexander Ross (c.1590-1654) commonly known as Koran, Alcoran of Mohammad, translated Quran into English language from the Arabic language in 1649. He also prepares explanatory notes which were taken from the most authentic commentators.

18th century:

  •  In 1734, The Koran by George Sale (1697-1736), translated Quran into English language from the basic language Arabic by using the Maracci’s (1698) translation of Latin. He also prepares explanatory notes and commentaries into English.

19th century:
  • The Koran by John Medows Rodwell (1808-1900) was a Non-Muslim Islamic scholar. His more significant work is the translation of Quran into English from the basic language Arabic in 1861.
  • The Koran by Edward Henry Palmer (1840-1882), was a great English explorer and orientalist. He translated the Quran into English language in 1880.

20th century:    
  • Maulana Muhammad Ali (1874-1951), was an Indian writer and scholar. He serves his life to restored and pristine Islamic faith. He translated the Holy Quran into English from the basic language Arabic in 1917. This was the greatest work in his life.
  • The Koran by Marmaduke Pickthall (1875-1936) was a Western Islamic scholar. His more significant work is the translation of Quran into English language in 1930
  •  Abdullah Yusuf Ali (1872-1953), was a British Indian scholar and trustee of East London Mosque. In 1934, he translated the holy book Quran into English language and prepares commentaries in English. It is one of the most widely used translations in English world.
  • Maulvi Sher Ali (1875-1947), was born in Lahore Pakistan and was an outstanding Ahmadi Muslim scholar. He was the founder of Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam. He was more famous due to one of his earliest translations of holy book Quran in English language with Arabic text and English translation in 1936.
  • Arthur John Arberry (1905-1969), was an outstanding scholar of Arabic, Persian and Islamic studies. In 1955, The Koran interpreted, translation of Holy Quran into English is one of the most important works written by non-Muslim. This translation also respected amongst all academics.
  • Muhammad Zafrulla Khan was a prominent Islamic scholar. In 1971, he translated the holy book Quran into English language.
  • Hashim Amir Ali (1903-1987), was an Islamic scholar and writer. He was a scholar of clear vision. In 1974, he translated the holy book Quran into English and arranged it according to the order of time and date.
  • Muhammad Asad (1900-1992), was a Jewish born, writer, journalist, Islamic scholar and one of the most influential European Muslims of 20th century. In 1980, he translated the Holy Quran into English language.
  • Sayyed Imam Isa Al Haadi Al Mehdi, translated the holy book Quran into English in 1981. He was the founder of Ansaaru Allah Community of the west.
  • Muhammad Mohsin Khan (1345AH-1927CE), was an Islamic doctor and Pashtu author. In 1985, he translated the Sahih al-Bukhari and Holy Quran (The Noble Quran) into English language.
  •  Thomas Ballantyne Irving (1914-2002) was also known as Al-Hajj Ta’lim Ali Abu Nasr or T.B. Irving. He was first American who translated the Holy Quran into American English in 1985.
  •  Muhammad Habib Shakir (1866-1939), wan an Egyptian judge and translated the holy book Quran into English (1989-05).
