The word “Hadith” refers to the report that describes the words, actions or habits adopted by our last Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). This word is derived from the Arabic meaning “report”, “narrative”, “description” or “account”. Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) is an exemplary model for all mankind. He (PBUH) does everything according to the laws and orders of Allah Almighty. After the revelation of Holy Quran, this is the second which helps in developing the Islamic laws according to the Allah Almighty. Hadith is considered as an important book for understanding the Quran, major elements of Islam and also every aspect of life.

There is a wide list of Hadith books which describes the words, actions, approvals, disapprovals to the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). The six more authentic books of ahadith are mostly known as al-Sihah al-Sittah. Six more authentic books declared by Sunni Muslim Scholars are given below:

Sahih al-Bukhari:
Sahih al-Bukhari is one of the books of ahadith (last Prophet sayings, actions or habits) collection known as al-Siha al-Sitta which is compiled by Sunni Muslim Scholar Muhammad al-Bukhari. He was born in Persia (d.256 AH, 870 CE) and includes about 7,275 ahadith. Muhammad al-Bukhari’s ahadith books are more authentic and useful.

Sahih Muslim:
Sahih Muslim is the second authentic book of ahadith (last Prophet sayings, actions or habits) collection which is compiled by Sunni Muslim Scholar named Zaidi Sahih Muslim. He was born in 261 AH and died in 875 CE. His collection includes 9,200 ahadith. After the Sahih al-Bukhari collection, this is the second most authentic and correct collection of ahadith.

Sunan Abu Dawood:
Sunan Abu Dawood is another ahadith collection (al-Sihah al-Sitta) which is compiled by Sunni Muslim Scholar named Abu Dawood. He was born in 275 AH and died in 888 CE. He collect 500,000 ahdith but includes only 4, 8000 ahadith. Sunni scholars give his collection as fourth number in the ahadith collection (al-Sihah al-Sitta) according to their strength.

Jami ‘at-Tirmidhi:
Jami’at-Tirmidhi is the fourth book of ahadith collection (al-Sihah al-Sitta) which is compiled by Muslim Scholar named Abu ‘Isa Muhammad ibn ‘Isa at-Tirmidhi. He was born in 279 AH and died in 892 CE. He includes about 3,956 ahadith. Sunni scholars give his collection as fifth number in the ahadith collection (al-Sihah al-Sitta) according to their strength.

Sunan al-Sughra:
Sunan al-Sughra is also one of the books of six major ahadith (Holy Prophet’s sayings, actions or habits) collections which are compiled by Sunni Muslim Scholar Al-Nasa’i. He was born in 303 AH and died in 915 CE. His ahdith collection includes about 5,270 ahadith. This collection is on third number among al-Sihah al-Sitta according to its strength.

Sunan Ibn Majah:
Sunan Ibn Majah is one of the books of six major ahadith collection (al-Sihah al-Sitta) which is compiled by Sunni Muslim Scholar Ibn Majah. He was born in 273 AH and died in 887 CE. His ahadith collection includes over 4,000 ahadith. The Sunni Scholar gives it the sixth number in the six major collection of ahadith (-Sihah al-Sitta) according to its strength.

This collection is considered as the earliest ahadith collection that was compiled by Imam Malik ibn Anas. He was born in 179 AH and died in 795 CE. His ahadith collection includes about 1,720 ahadith. Imam Malik’s collection provides the basis of exact Islamic laws according to the Holy book Quran Pak. The ahadith collection al-Muwatta was one of the parts of his best work.
